Goal

To see within same match up how top macs play neutral.

Vods

For this we are reviewing below vods vs the Yoshi MU:

Player

Vod

Lvl 7

vs Pharaoh (Yoshi)

Tarakatori

vs Fui (Yoshi)

Pre-Watch Analysis

Below details my understand of Yoshi and how may approach neutral

Highlights of Yoshi:

  1. spaced tilts on shield if keep low profile can some what be safe, but generally will nair or ariel out of shield which can hit many times

  2. If Yoshi tries to grab out of shield (eg you daf smash shield), can usually side B over and hit

  3. Yoshi largely wants to approach from air, especially with a nair or down air (which can set up tech chases). We can neutral B the down air

  4. Yoshi really want to get kills either via edge guard or up air juggle. Can be hard to land against Yoshi given cant neutral B up air, and it can kill decently early if get hit high

  5. Stage usually like without high plats personally like not super long stages, as like to push aggression once get a hit in neutral. an FD like stage can be good

  6. Do not jump when hit off stage unless you want to be dair spiked (that hitbox is deceiving).

  7. Eggs are quite reactable with shield (so not much of threat)

  8. Dash attack is quite reactable

  9. Good to keep in mind Yoshi’s special characteristics:

    1. Super Armour when jump

    2. Cant be shield poked

  10. If Up tilt out early percents can usually nair quickly given uptilt is negative on hit at early percents. Many Yoshi’s I face ariel attack out of disadvantage

  11. If you don’t tech in this MU you will die very early. Your ability to reset neutral is key as goes from manageable vs snowballing (racking up large damage quick off one interaction)

  12. Recovery generally like recovering low and close to stage (helps avoid his nair and dair well)

What does this mean for neutral.

  1. Yoshis threat/burst range given ability to react on shield or movement (eg dash away), is not great. So he wants to approach from plats and/or air many times.

  2. Neutral I like to take slow (so can easily react to options chosen), and using uptilt and uaf smash as anti air.

  3. lot of bait and punish (use plats at times to bait out plat drop ariel attack)

  4. In neutral I may do some MU check items (eg do they think can grab OOS).

  5. Abuse super armour on his ariels

Vod Reviews

Lvl 7 vs Pharoah (Yoshi)

Play-By-Play

Timestamp

Observation

0:18

Baits out parry on back air approach

0:41

Sitting outside burst range (approx half battlefield plat) and attacks with space dtilt on landing

1:01

Use of plat camping/as form of movement though fine, need to be careful with jump as Yoshi easily can hit while in air

1:15

Good ledge trap sequence. Especially given most of Yoshis get back to ledge options are reactable

1:33

use of roll to ensure not under Yoshi

3:35

Upsmash when Yoshi air super armour and reversaled. When use to hit and when (eg when in Yoshi) important as can put you in disadvantage

Review

  1. Key parts of neutral:

    1. Stay more grounded dont get caught jumping much

    2. Stay in front yoshi, not underneath

    3. Using dtilt to intiate advantage (especially given (2))

Tarakatori vs Fui (Yoshi)

Play-By-Play

Timestamp

Observation

0:29

Seeing this here and other places early, where goes for large distance and aggressive burst option whether that dash attack, side B, run in up smash if in air.

0:56

Seeing lot of jump out of disadvantage (assuming to evade the follow up air), I know I do this lot to (does have trade off on making landing harder)

1:12

Seeing lot of reverse uptilt as opposed to dtilt in neutral

1:21

Mixes up run in grab (as Yoshi started to shield on approach)

1:24

Nice use of SL on plat to maintain neutral after whiff (as tanking Yoshis tilts). Likely cant make habit as up air and up smash will be good follow up by Yoshi

2:08

Use lot of sharking the plats with up smash given that is space Yoshi feels comfortable and way to help start their advantage state

2:24

Up B out of disadvantage missing, and have seen this in this vod and other mac vods a bit as well.

3:01

If mac whiffs hit, looks to shield or create space

Review

  1. Early heavy use of counter in disadvantage but also neutral. It missed lot

  2. Relied lot more on up smash and uptilt to start advantage, liked large space to burst option like dash attack

Retrospective

  1. Prior to vod review, my style for neural on Yoshi was more Tarakatori’s style

  2. to (1), though after watching, it is style that feels bit more high risk high reward. Lvl 7, approach feels more consistent.

Notes

  1. Yoshi armour lasts whole time air until legs stop moving

  2. dash attack will break usually given enough not back (can check via calculator depending on rage and staleness)

  3. Dtilt use was largely also because can hurtbox shift against his moves

  4. How Lvl 7 forumlated gameplan:

  5. What move does Yoshi need to kill me? 1. dont want back air, minimize to like dash attack and jab?

  6. fine being in corner as long as infront of

  7. Will run up to shield and roll/dash away because yoshi main OOS is nair and upair. Most characters used to hitting

  8. use UAF Smash to make them change timing as they need to start advantage from ariel attack

  9. Changed move attacked with based on if want stage control

  10. Would think if hits needs to be “first” or “second” (ie super armour)

  11. Used lot of uaf smash when drop from plat because likes to ariel and we will tank
